When you click on the Filter By Group Button (Command-Shift-F), you will be prompted to select a group.  The contact window will filter your addressbook to only display members of the selected group.  Go to the Groups section to learn more.  To clear the filter you can select a different group for click on the show all button (Command-Shift-G) in the tool bar.
